First Snowfall/ Snowman of the season - 10.18.2015

What a difference a week makes! These photos were taken last weekend - a week after Thanksgiving. These two were so amazed watching the snow fall. At 7:00 a.m. the Little Man started begging me to go outside to play in the snow. I'm not going to lie, I just wanted to hangout inside, sipping my latte and watching the snowfall from the window. We had lots of fun building Frosty. Luckily by the following day the snow was all gone. Hopefully we won't see Frosty for a few more weeks!

Last weekend we celebrated our 7 year wedding anniversary with breakfast at Cora's. I waited 7 years to try out this restaurant and it was delicious. We were suppose to go there the morning after our wedding day, but we were just to busy the day after and didn't end up making it there.

I'm breaking the rules again this week as I feel this photo needs a little explaining. This past weekend we took a day trip to Aunt R's place so dad could help with some things that needed to be done. Usually the Lil Man & I stay home as he does not do well with long car rides. He has an extremely hard time being constrained in a seat and sitting there for a long time. This time we packed everyone in the car, including the dog and hoped for the best. We took a lovely route through Hockley Valley. It was very scenic. All was good until we were about 5 minutes away and the dog decided to sit beside Mr. H and ended up sitting on his bag of cars. He was not happy with her. Luckily by the time we arrived all was good again and he was happy to be visiting Aunt R at her house. He loved all the toys she had set out for him. It was a lovely Saturday!

JULY 25, 2015 - R + M's wedding.
We had a great time celebrating an amazing couple (Mr. & Mrs. R) Saturday evening as they tied the knot. It was my first time attending an outdoor wedding ceremony and it was so beautiful. Such a wonderful wedding - a gorgeous bride, a lovely venue and the food was great! I felt a little lost not having my little side kick with us. It was so hard leaving him at home sick when he needed us but we are so glad we were able to witness Byron's cousins say their I do's! I Aren't these handmade flowers the bride made just stunning?

It's been a long week at our place with a very sick Lil Man. Sunday he had a fever of almost 40 C and he just wasn't breaking it even with taking Advil and Tylenol so we took him to the ER. The doctor figures he had an ear infection and possibly a throat one too. He's been up through the night a lot more than usual and it's been a very exhausting week.  When I look back at the month of July, I'm glad to see it go. It really did not treat us well.

2015 Garden Update

Our veggie garden is taking it's sweet time this year.  The plants really struggled at first. It think because I planted everything a weekend to early in May. The Lil man enjoyed his first garden peas a couple days ago.  Still no cucumbers or beans.

Strawberries in our own backyard
I'm breaking the rules this week for "this moment". I've been meaning to plant some strawberry plants in our backyard for a few years now, but never got around to doing it. This year however, I finally went out and bought some and they are doing well! They are a little late but they are really yummy.

Some see a weed ...

The temperatures dropped drastically in our area last week and we received another light snow fall. I think I drank 3 or 4 coffee's that day. I just could not warm up. The snow was all gone by the weekend, but the temperatures are a little on the cool side. I guess they are back to more seasonal temperatures. As the snow fell I couldn't stop worrying about my tulips and peonies shrub as they had been enjoying the warm temperatures from two weeks ago. Keeping my fingers crossed the temperature drop doesn't damage them.

This week I thought I would share a photo of my Saint John's Wort (hypeticum) shrub. This shrub blooms in August at our place & the bees love it! In the wild this plant is considered a weed but in our yard it's a flowering shrub.  It's such a bright, happy yellow bloom and it's so pretty!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a lovely day!

Easter 2015

Things are starting to get busier around our place now that the weather is starting to warm up.  There's so much to do outside to prepare for the warm days of summer. There is no garden post this week as I spent my blog time on this Easter recap.

This year Easter was a lot more fun than previous years. The little man was all into searching for all the Easter eggs. He loved it to say the least and we enjoyed watching him searching for all his eggs!  He was so excited! Once he was done opening his Easter Gifts we all (including the dog)  enjoyed playing with his new toys. Friday's post was from Easter morning.

We enjoyed two delicious Easter meals.  The first was at Oma & Opa's place. Roxy is always in the kitchen looking for goodies when she's at Oma & Opa's

I was able to use my new toy for the salad we brought.  Oma had some gorgeous hydrangeas that Aunt R gave to her.  They were such a pretty colour.

Aunt R surprised the Lil Man with an Easter Kinder egg.

They are  gigantic - the little egg in the picture above is a regular sized Kinder egg.  In case you are not aware,  Kinder eggs are now gender specific ... I believe they have been for awhile now. I remember grabbing a 3 pack of Boy Kinder eggs last Easter for the Lil Man.  You have to look closely at the packaging on these Easter eggs to notice which gender they are for. Aunt R was not aware of this and accidentally grabbed the Lil Man a girl Kinder lol.  It has not stopped the Lil Man from enjoying and playing with his new toy though.  It was actually very fitting because he loves watching the birds and looking for them in the sky.

Our other Easter meal was at Avó & Avô's place. If the weather is decent out, they usually make something on the BBQ and it is so enjoyable after a long winter of  little to no BBQ meals! I made some macaroon Easter nests and some brownies.

Overall we had a very nice Easter long weekend. We did not have to travel far and we were surrounded by our family.

Hope you had a lovely Easter as well!

Hydrangeas

There is something about fresh cut flowers in a mason jar that just makes them even prettier.

I simply love these beauties.

I wish my hydrangeas bloomed all summer and had more blooms.

Last year I found this giant bloom buried down near the bottom of the plant in a shady spot. It sure did love the shade!

I was in shock when I found it ... it was almost like finding a lost treasure. Keeping my fingers crossed I find more blooms like this on my hydrangea shrub this year.

Thanks for visiting! Have a lovely day!

Hens and Chicks

Do you have succulents in your garden? I have some Hens and Chicks but they struggle near the end of the summer. This year I need to relocate them.

I was introduced to these succulents when I first started gardening at my parents. I really like the different texture it adds to a garden. If they are planted in a desirable location they can get really big and they are relatively low maintenance as they don't require much watering or care.  The "hen" is the main plant (the Mommy), and the "chicks" are the offspring, which start as tiny buds on the main plant and soon sprout their own roots, taking up residence close to the mother plant. These guys even bloom, unfortunately I do not have a photo of the bloom. Will have to add it to my list of photos to snap this year!

Hope you had a wonderful Easter weekend! Have a great day!!

I know it's not suppose to have words but this photo requires a little explaining - Mr. H had just tucked Roxy in for a nap with all the items he uses when it's his bed time. He even covered her up and she stayed like this for a good 5 minutes lol.

Ps. if you missed last weeks you can find it here.

Turkey & Egg Breakfast Cups

I was looking through our blog posts this past weekend and realized I am long overdue for a recipe post. I really enjoy blogging but for the past year life has just been a little hectic. I have even contemplated forgetting about the blog for good. But then I have a day when I get a chance to sit, sip on a coffee and scroll through our posts and I really enjoy reading and reminiscing about all the memories each photo brings back. Then I realize I am not ready to give it up. If I only get a chance to blog once a month, at least that's something to look back on.

Ever since the Lil Man became a picky eater I have found it really difficult to get inspired to try new recipes. Which really sucks because I really enjoyed it ... and still enjoy it.  I miss the days Hubby and I would make something together in the kitchen for dinner while sipping away on a glass of wine.

With Easter coming up this weekend I thought this would be a good recipe to share. I have been experimenting with these turkey cups for well over a year and I think I finally found a way we really enjoy them.

I've made these a couple different ways.  The first time I made them with bacon, but we found they are really greasy and unhealthy.  As a treat every so often they are ok with bacon,  but I would not want to have the bacon version all the time.

We like them best when we made them with sliced turkey.

If you want to give these a try, here's our version.

Turkey Cups
 Makes 6 cups

Preheat oven to 350 degrees

Grease six muffin cups.
Line each cup with 1 slice of turkey meat.
Add some grated cheese (about 1 tbsp.) to each cup.
Dice approximately 1/4 pepper into small pieces and divide equally among each cup.
Add real bacon bits to each cup (not a lot just a few pieces).

In a bowl
Add1/3 cup milk to 4 eggs,  add salt and pepper to taste and beat mixture.
Chop 1 green onion & set aside a bit for the top at the end. Add the rest to the egg mixture and stir well.
Divide & pour the egg mixture into each cup equally.
Add some chopped chives on top (that you previously set aside).

Bake for approximately 15 minutes or until eggs are no longer runny.

Enjoy!

Red Current Shrub

Hello there! It's hard to believe March is already coming to an end and Easter is this coming weekend! It is finally starting to feel like spring around our place. We are still getting the odd flurries and some snow, but it is not staying around for long. The robins have started singing bright and early every morning and throughout the day. Plants are starting to poke up in the garden (our tulips, peonies, iris's and daylilies). Most of the snow that fell throughout the winter is almost all gone!! The last couple days the temperatures have dropped and it's still chilly, but it did not stop me from opening up the windows on the weekend to air out the house. All these signs of spring just warm my heart and make me so happy!!

This is our Red Current berry shrub that my MIL gave me! Over time they do get large. Over the winter when the Lil Man is over at Oma & Omp's place he likes jumping on their bed and looking out the window to see if the birds are eating any of the berries. Her Red Current bush is as high as their window.  Oma has informed me that you can make jam with these berries but they are sour. I love having it in the garden! It's a perennial and it's a great food source for the Birds.

As I was working on this post I realised I do not have many great photos of this shrub, so these two will have to do. I usually trim it down in the fall because it seems to grow a lot each year and I don't want it getting too big. I am thinking this year I will leave it to trim in the spring of 2016!

Have a lovely Monday!
